Alexandros Voukenas

I'm a freelance GIS consultant based in Athens. I have an engineering diploma in surveying, geodesy and geoinformatics, and almost ten years of work experience across GIS, satellite imagery, geospatial data, spatial analysis and digital cartography. I've always brought a fresh perspective into my projects while designing and developing technical solutions that work.

Among those years, I was always fascinated by a certain type of question. "Do people perceive their environment in the same way that we engineers map it?". "Those mapping guidelines can be interpreted in different ways, where does that depend on?".This is what led me to explore the paths of cognition, and therefore to pursue a Master's in Cognitive Science. It has already equipped me with a clearer understanding of how people read, interpret and recall information, and with the methods to test that rather than assume it.

Practically, this means my work now runs in two directions: the GIS and geospatial development I've always done, and work on how technical knowledge gets presented, whether that's writing for a technical audience or structuring domain knowledge so it can be retrieved and used. Implemented planning of Fiber-to-the-Home networks' projects, for numerous telecommunications providers.
Designed efficient automation workflows and GIS tools for projects' planning, fostering collaboration accross teams.

Team leader for large-scale map production projects. Undertook coordination activities and quality control of products.
Provided technical consulting for RnD project proposals, mainly in the Earth Observation domain.
